About 'Death Note'

Death Note is a new anime, based on the popular manga of the same name. What follows is a brief introduction into the world of Death Note. To find out more about the series, be sure to visit http://deathnote.viz.com.

Though a brilliant high school student with a bright future ahead of him, Light Yagami is bored with life. Accompanying this boredom is a deep resentment towards the crimes and cruelty of the world. Then one day, as if by fate, Light discovers a mysterious black notebook, with the words "Death Note" scribed on the cover. Inside is written a set of rules, describing how the owner can control the time and method of another person's death.

The rules written inside are as follows:

• The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
• This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
• If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not specified, the subject will simply die of a heart attack.
• After wrie cause of death, the details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

Light YagamiThinking the book a hoax, Light takes it home anyway, and as a joke, decides to test it. Seeing a murderer's picture and name on TV, Light writes his name in the Death Note. Much to Light's surprise, the man dies, and he begins to think the book may not be a hoax after all. Light finally confirms that it's genuine when a bully from his school is killed in the exact way his death is written in the book. Light spends the next several days writing the names of the most vicious killers into the Death Note.

One night, a Shinigami (or "death god") by the name of Ryuk suddenly appears, and claims to be the previous owner of the Death Note. Light, not surprised that an object like this would come from such a being, Ryuk why he was chosen to receive notebook. Ryuk responds that Light wasn't, in fact, chosen at all. Ryuk goes on to explain that he was bored in the Shinigami World and decided the drop his Death Note into the Human World to see what would happen when a random person found it. Finding Light to be an interesting human, Ryuk insists that he keep the book. Citing his own boredom, Light decided to use this newly found power of judgment to create a world of peace and justice. Light is aided in his quest by Misa Amane, a girl with the telekinetic ability to sense names by seeing the faces of the criminals.

Detective 'L'

Meanwhile, baffled by the rash of criminal deaths, the police enlist the help of the mysterious detective, known only as "L". Brilliant in his own right, L is able to deduct the relative location of the killer, dubbed "Kira", as well as the his ability to kill a person, without ever touching them.

Soon the cat and mouse chase begins, with Light and L matching wits against one another. As L tries to determine the true identity of Kira and apprehend him, Light tries to discover L's true identity and add his name to the many, within pages of the Death Note...
